Review: This book results from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop ‘The Role of Independent Scientists in WMD Threat Assessment’ which took place at Zagreb in November 2008. Questions raised by the papers included what constituted a threat assessment; what role do cultural dependencies play within assessments and what was the role of independent scientists in their production; the question of what exactly constituted an independent scientist; what institutional, funding and other pressures threaten independence; should scientists operate through existing national, international, or new structures; and how scientists should produce assessments. The book is classified into six sections: Institutions, Structures and Mechanisms; Chemical and Biological Weapons; Nuclear Weapons, Missiles and Missile Defence; NATO’s Role in South-Eastern Europe in the light of WMD Threat Assessment; Scientists, Citizens and the Media; Concluding Comments.
