Here Veronica Burton talks about her experience of major depression: hospital admissions; treatments, including medication, ECT and ‘talking’ treatments. After an experience of depression as a teenager, Veronica had a ten-year remission – again falling into depression after being unfairly-treated at the hospital where she was nursing; the depression was to last for 19 years. Throughout that time she kept a journal, which is the basis of this book. She explains how, as a nurse, it was difficult to cope with being cared for by psychiatric colleagues and discusses the care given to her by medical and nursing staff. |
