The global burden of HIV now stands at over 33 million cases, and 25 million people have already died. At the same time TB is flourishing: in KwaZulu Natal in South Africa 70% of people with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection are also infected with HIV. This deadly liaison is rooted in the pathogenesis of the two infections. This book provides an overview of the key issues and the state-of-the-art research into TB and HIV infections. Part One looks at immunology and vaccination strategies for AIDS and TB (prospects for HIV vaccines, immune response for TB as a basis for vaccination strategies, BCG vaccination in the HIV+newborn). Part Two looks at drugs for HIV and TB. The last part, Part Three, deals with clinical issues (diagnosis and management of HIV infection, clinical challenges of HIV-associated TB, TB/AIDS coinfection, drug resistant TB and AIDS, and the immune reconstitution inflammatory system). |
