This undergraduate textbook provides an introduction to optimization for students who have completed a multivariate calculus course. It begins by giving real-world modelling problems and providing step-by-step solutions using optimization. The following chapters include: Impractical optimization; Basic practical optimization; Some practical modifications; Constraints; Integer variables; and other methods. There are a series of ‘Asides’ scattered throughout the book, providing additional material and explanations. There are also practical exercises, problems, computational problems and implementations (depending heavily on the use of the computer to implement the optimization methods). An accompanying website offers Mathematica notebooks to support the ‘Implementations’. |
