Review: Virtualization has become a buzzword in the IT industry for the last two years and is altering the computer industry profoundly. The reason is that hardware capacity has increased so much, that servers are underutilized and virtualization allows this capacity to be used. There is also a saving in electricity consumption. Virtualization has its origins in the 1960s. IBM first used it to partition mainframe computers, into separate virtual machines. These partitions allowed the mainframes to multi-task which allowed the running of multiple applications and processes at the same time. This was allowed greater usage of the expensive mainframes. Virtualization fell out of favour with in the 1980s and 1990s when inexpensive x86 servers came along. However they were gradually seen to suffer from rigidity of application and underutilization as in the 1960s and the industry had come full circle. Today more than 4 million virtual machines are installed and VMware is by far the market leader with 100% coverage of Fortune 100 companies according the authors of the book. The VMworld annual conference attracted 14,000 attendees in 2008. This book is for anyone interested in virtual system management of VMware. The reader should be familiar with basic java programming and OS virtualization basics. The book will show you how to program VI SDK for your work. The book introduces the VI Java API developed by the author. With this you can build much shorter, faster and much more readable and maintainable code. Most chapters are organized around the various management tasks which are supported by VI SDK managed objects.
