The study of glaciers has immense significance for the understanding and predicting of global environmental changes. They provide a wealth of information about how the Earth has changed in the past. This book provides a broad picture of the current understanding of key issues that relate the study of glaciers to the broader field of environmental change. Contributors have presented their own personal perspectives; where controversy has emerged, this highlights the current edge of the state of knowledge. The book’s 92 chapters are divided into five subject areas: glaciers and their coupling with hydraulic and sedimentary processes; glaciers, oceans, atmosphere and climate; changing glaciers and their role in Earth surface evolution; glacier composition, mechanics and dynamics; and the practice of glaciology. |
