Currently, for every dollar spent on hardware, 50 cents is spent on power and cooling. The average data centre is only 52% utilized with 1/3 of data centres approaching maximum floor capacity. The average rack is 56% utilized and 1/3 of data centres are approaching maximum rack density. This book examines the technologies in the data centre and looks at how they can be made more efficient. It is divided into four parts. The first part, Server Consolidation, looks at the existing server sprawl and gives details of different solutions. The second part, Backup, Recovery, and Archive, looks at the inefficiencies of the current systems and gives plans and strategies to rectify these. Part III, Networking, looks at existing networking systems with their legacies and inefficient electronics. A case study is given of the initiatives employed in a retail firm. The last part, General Green Topics, covers SQL Server consolidation techniques, Cloud computing; Data centre design; Simple green techniques, and describes a product that can continuously report and monitor small IT installations. |
