Review: Mathematics and computers can be used to create complex original shapes and designs that are sometimes similar to patterns observed in nature or those created by man. Here the authors aim to describe how these pictures were formed and their connection with symmetry and chaos. The book shows how the pictures are produced and how they relate to the mathematical ideas of symmetry and chaos. It goes on to pair off a number of pictures from nature (diatoms, shellfish, flowers etc.) and a number of decorative designs (rose window, corporate logos, ceramic tiles etc.) with computer-produced designs using symmetric chaos methods. This new edition takes advantage of the increasing power of desktop computers to enable a significant improvement of the resolution of the images as well as improvements in the colouring algorithms.
