This book provides an integrated account of the processes and their consequences on the characterization and evolution of coastal wetlands. These best develop along passive-margin coasts with low-gradient coastal plains and wide continental shelves. Low hydraulic energy and gentle slopes provide an ideal setting for wetland development. They have an important position in our environment however the public at large are not greatly aware of them, and accordingly can suffer from harmful exploitation. Part I covers wetlands structured according to broad climactic regions and the processes common to all coastal wetlands. Part II covers specifics of each type of wetland such as tidal flats, marshes and seagrasses and mangroves. Other parts cover their particular morphology, sedimentology and so on, and final parts cover restoration and management, sustainability and landscape dynamics. There are over 60 contributors, and 50 reviewers of their work. The book contains a subject index and additionally a geographic index of countries and areas, and taxonomic index. |
