The book is intended to evaluate existing building materials in addition to new materials, typically used by conventional builders. All fixed components and elements of a building are included except heating, ventilation and sanitary services. Materials of high environmental performance are described in more detail than those of lower performance. The book was first published in English in 2000 and is here updated with new materials and greater knowledge derived over the last 10 years. Issues of climate change have also had a bearing on new material. Chapter titles are resources, pollution, local production and the human ecological aspect, the chemical and physical properties of building materials, water and air, minerals, stone, soil materials, fossil oils, plants, materials of animal origin, industrial by-products, structural materials, climatic materials, surface materials, windows doors and stairs, fixings and connections, paint varnish stain and wax, impregnating agents and how to avoid them. The book contains many colour and black and white pictures, tables and is completed with a seven page index. |
