In 2003 the European policy makers pushed for a biofuels Directive that fixed a non-binding target that biofuels should account for of 5.75% of fuel consumption by 2010; this was pushed up to a target of 10% by 2020. The questions arise: Is it rational to fix such an unrealistic target? Does the EU have sufficient land to produce so much biofuel? What are the drawbacks of intensive production? Is this really the right path to sustainability? These and other questions are addressed in this book as the author examines the multifaceted world of biofuels and aims to shed light on this complex topic. |
