This special edition of Disease Markers is dedicated to Stem Cells and Disease. Contributers describe the role of cancer stem cells and progenitor cells in disease progression and treatment. These reviews cover the gamut of tissue types and cell lines, as well as differentiating between normal and diseased cells and tissues. The contributors have attempted to give an overview of the concepts and controversies developing in stem cell biology as it relates to disease formation in a variety of tissues. There are papers on: Stem cell biomarkers in chronic myeloid leukaemia; Stem cells in gastrointestinal cancers; Stem cells and cancer in the liver; Stem cells in Niemann–Pick disease; Stem cells in spinal cord injury; TGF-ß signalling in neuronal stem cells; Lung cancer stem cells; Application of biomarkers of spermatogonial stem cells for restoring male fertility, and Androgen-forming stem Leydig cells. |
