Humans wage a constant war with microbial pathogens that can cause them misery and death. As man develops preventative measures (vaccines) and chemotherapeutic defences (antimicrobials), pathogens evolve to resist them. This textbook aims to bridge the gap between scientists and clinicians, taking the student through the basics of microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases, and giving an understanding of the host–parasite relationship in the development and prevention of infection. There are chapters describing: an introduction to microbial and infectious diseases; major human microbial infectious diseases; viruses; bacteria; protozoa; fungi; and microbes as bioweapons. |
