Small Form Factor (SFF) usually refers to computers with a small footprint: a SFF PC has most of the same features as a standard PC – fast processor, plenty of memory; hard drive; video, sound etc. – but they usually have fewer expansion options due to their small size. However, this book looks at even smaller, less powerful systems, which one could call embedded devices. It explains how eight of these devices work and how to use them. The chapters describe the devices in order of decreasing size – from the size of Mini-ITX based systems to the size of a stick of gum: a digital audio jukebox; a digital video recorder; a home network gateway; a network monitor; a Wi-Fi extender; a portable bridging firewall; a cheap Wi-Fi SSH client; and a scrolling Bluetooth LED sign. |
