Parasitoids are insects whose females lay their eggs in or on other insects. The larvae feed on the host insect resulting in its death. Because of this, parasitoids are often used in the natural control of insect populations, thus preventing insect pests (often termed biological control). Parasitoids are found in nearly all terrestrial ecosystems and have great diversity making them a rich source for biological study. This parasitism behaviour and its study is central to the success of biological control. The book contains 18 chapters each of which is written by two specialists which all combine to cover virtually all the key aspects of parasitoid behviour and their relevance for efficient biological control |
