Many airports have insufficient capacity to meet demand. Capacity can be allocated on a first come, first serve, basis (as is usual in the US). Congestion and congestion costs can be managed by quantitative restrictions (such as an airport slot system) or pricing. This book considers the methods that are currently used to allocate slots and applies economic analysis to each. It has six parts: The current slot allocation system; Congestion, slots and prices; Airline strategies and competition; International experiences; Auctions and alternatives; and Reforming the slot system. The book is edited by an international team of air transport economists. It is a compilation of selected papers that were presented at five workshops organised by the German Aviation Research Society. |
