The Skylark sounding rocket was a small rocket designed to carry experiments into the upper atmosphere. The experiments are carried in the compartment below the nose and are activated at the correct altitude. This book looks at the first 15 years and the development and operation of the Skylark from its inception under the UK space-research programme through to its deployment under the ESRPO programme. It was first launched in 1957 and the ESRO programme closed in 1972, though the rocket continued after this in a different basis – the last Skylark being launched in 2005. |
