Review: Biodiversity is declining at an increasingly fast pace. Habitat break-up, pollution, overuse of the land and the creation of artificial landscapes increase the rate of erosion, while reducing the opportunity for species to migrate and disperse. In an attempt to strengthen environment and biodiversity conservation policies a Pan-European Ecological Network, covering Eurasia, was set up in 1995. This report is a result this, and maps the developments and implementation of the work of this Network in the 55 concerned states. It is based on replies to a questionnaire sent to the participating countries, on discussions with government experts, and on published works. The aim of the report is to inform ministers and heads of delegations on the progress of the work so far.
