Review: It is an undeniable fact that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing. There is considerable scientific consensus that CO2 and other gases, such as methane act as ‘greenhouse gases’, allowing the planet to absorb and retain more of the Sun’s heat. In this context, this paper explores what the predicted changes might mean for Europe’s biodiversity and for the legislative and practical aspects of conserving Europe’s natural heritage. Precise recommendations are made to governments and conservation agencies that collaborate in the framework of the Bern convention. The paper aims to provide a basis for discussion about the possible adaptation strategies if Europe’s biodiversity is to be conserved.
