The river is a stream of water flowing along a bed in the earth to the sea (lake or river). The riverscape is that part of the landscape that has (or had) a watercourse as its focus. Here the author looks at how the quantity, function and ecology of river water changes as it flows from watershed to river and how the river and riverscape develops. He examines the ecology and how human impact (both destructive and interesting) has impacted on the riverscape. There are, among others, chapters on: the natural river and its destruction and on its modification; resources (water resources, plants and animals, settlements and construction); the development and variation of rivers and riverscapes; the building blocks of river vegetation, flood plain vegetation and the riverscape. |
