Here Guy Brown, a researcher into the molecular mechanisms of cell death degenerative looks at ‘the future of death’. In the past, the shortness of life meant that death was shorter and occurred in much younger people. Now, in the developed world, people may reach advanced old age and death may come more slowly. The author looks at death at various levels – from the cell, to the whole body, to society. He looks at cell death, at the cutting edge of biology and medicine, from embryo formation to cancer cures. The life expectancy is constantly increasing and shows no sign of reaching a fixed maximum. The final chapter looks at whether there can be a ‘cure’ for ageing – and a postscript gives ‘Nine things to do before we die’. |
