This book explains and comments on Vmware ESX Server versions 2.5.x and 3.0. It lays out a fundamental structure on which a general theory of networking can be built. The author begins with a return to fundamentals, to remind us of the minimum assumptions require for communication and for the tools for working with abstractions. He looks at the familiar world of protocols and separating mechanism and policy. The following chapters cover: stalking the upper-layer architecture; naming and addressing; divining layers; the network ICP model; making addresses topological; multihoming, multicast and mobility; backing out of a blind alley; and outline for Gedanken experiment on separating mechanism and policy. |
