Review: A post-war ageing housing stock and the accompanying social problems call for urban renewal throughout Europe in the decades ahead. In the Netherlands current restructuring programmes tend to focus on demolition and replacement of buildings. This brings up the questions: ‘What is a sustainable neighbourhood?’ ‘Is this the most effective strategy to achieve this?’ This book looks at the policy of demolition and replacement from different perspectives: an economic perspective – the market position and the value of our neighbourhoods; a social perspective – the levels of social capital and residential stability; and an environmental perspective – energy efficiency and the use of materials. The research was conducted by the Delft Research Centre for sustainable Urban Areas.
