Review: Complaints about the lack of profitability in the airline industry surface during periodic downturns, but the problem has been there since the industry started. Here Adam Pilarski, of Avitas, USA, puts forward reasons for the losses and looks at how the industry can be made profitable. The book has five parts. Part 1 (How bad is it?) examines the reality of the losses and forecasting of the variables involved. The next three parts look at the different reasons put forward for these losses: external factors, such as access to capital, aircraft costs, and competition; self-inflicted factors, such as labour relations, bad management, and pricing; and, finally, overregulation (government and public-ownership). The last part looks at how the industry can be improved by taking in lessons from the past and improving management.
