Review: One of the main goals of the WHO’s Mental Health Programme has been the development of a common language for use worldwide by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The IPDE has been developed for the Personal Disorder Examination. This book describes the trial of the IPDE at 14 centres in 11 countries in N. America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The objectives of the trials were to determine its cultural acceptability, user-friendliness, inter-rater reliability and temporal stability. Chapters cover: the background, problems in the field of personality disorder, a review of diagnostic instruments for the assessment of personality disorders, the epidemiology of DSM-III personality disorders in the community and in clinical populations, the IPDE, and experiences with the IPDE. There are also statistics from the field trials. The IPDE Manual is included at the end of the book.
