Review: Risk and uncertainly are unavoidable in the planning, design, construction and management of engineering systems. A way of accounting for risk and uncertainty in engineering design has been through a factor of safety, however this does not give any quantitative idea of the risk of a situation, and nowadays most decision makers want to know explicitly what will be the risk as a consequence of their decision, as well as the risks of operating an existing structure or project, and the consequences of any management action. This large book is divided into four parts. The first gives an overview of the art of decision-making under uncertainty and gives a background to probability and random variables etc. The second deals with probability distributions and parameter estimation. Part 3 covers uncertainty analysis, and the last part focuses on risk and reliability analysis.
