Review: These are the proceedings of the conference held in Racine, USA in July 2006. The authors of the papers look at the fundamentals of sustainable urban development, the vulnerability of cities to the stresses of extreme hydrological events such as hurricanes and tsunami, population increases, changes of urban landscape, and pollution. They also address the solutions to such problems, examining how to make cities and their landscapes resilient to these stresses, and identifying the barriers and they can be overcome. The chapters are divided into six sections: Urban water sustainability; The impact of extreme events; Monitoring, urban observatories and total mass balance of pollution in cities; Hydrologic and pollution stresses, response of receiving waters; Integrated solutions – water and landscape; and Implementing future urban hydrological and ecological systems.
