This book covers the knowledge and key skills that practitioners should have in order to work efficiently with older people who have, or are at risk of developing, mental health problems. The book is divided into five sections. The first gives the background, historical perspectives and influences of mental health care in later life. Part 2 goes on to focus on helping older individuals, examining the changes that affect mental health, the values underpinning support and care, legal and ethical frameworks within which care is given, and assessing older people with mental health needs. The next part reminds us of aspects that traditionally have been neglected, such as background, intimacy, nutrition, and palliative and end-of-life care. Part 4 deals with specific issues, such as delirium, depression and dementia. The last section looks at mental health and well-being for older people in the future and how nursing can develop to address these |
