Some organisms are able to survive or even thrive under ‘extreme’ conditions: at extremes of temperature, pressure, acid/alkalinity, lack of oxygen, and desiccation. Here David Wharton, an environmental physiologist, gives a very readable account, for both expert and non-expert readers, of the creatures that live in such extreme conditions, explaining their biology and how it enables them to survive. Following from this, he looks at what such organisms can tell us about the origins of life and the possibilities of life on other planets. |
