This is the result of a research project involving nine European partners investigating seven cities with respect to urban development and city sprawl. Up to now much of the literature on urban sprawl has come from the USA. The researchers, from universities and research institutes, came from a variety of backgrounds: sociology, ethnology, economics, town planning, architecture, geography, and natural sciences. The aim was to understand the nature of urban sprawl, its causes and consequences. The book is divided into three parts: Theory and Method; Types of urban sprawl in Europe; and Models, urban policy and sustainability. Policies for the control of urban sprawl and the roles of different stakeholders are considered and the book concludes with a look at the nature and dynamics of these new urban landscapes and their sustainability. |
