Review: Michael Bell sets out to explore how humans and society will evolve in the next 150 years. His basis is that the past and future of our society can only be understood in terms of the human inclination to form groups. The book is divided into three parts. The first tracks how our current society has evolved, looking at globalization and its tendency to weaken states. Similarly, the Internet bypasses states, allowing direct interaction between individuals. The second part envisages the future of human institutions, such as the nation state and language, in the face of globalization and advancing technology. The last part looks way into the future, beyond the 21st century, and imagines what the world will be like at the end of the 22nd century.
