This textbook has chapters on the nine theories of human development: evolutionary theory, psychosexual theory, cognitive development theory, learning theories, social role theory, life course theory, psychosocial theory, cognitive social-historical theory and dynamic systems theory. They are divided into those that emphasize biological systems in guiding the direction of growth, those that emphasize environmental factors, and those that emphasize dynamic interaction between dynamic, environmental, and self-directed forces. Grouping them in this way helps students to think critically about theoretical ideas, assess the validity of each theory, and gain a deeper understanding of how each theory guides research and application. |
