Review: This is the 10th volume in the Delft Hydraulics Select Series. For centuries, people have altered the natural flow of rivers, often to the detriment of downstream systems. Environmental flows are the proportion of the natural flow regime that is maintained by the river, wetland or coastal zone to sustain ecosystems and the benefits that they provide for people. This study looks at how to quantify all the benefits and negative impacts of allocating water to a certain use sector. Human well-being values have to be assessed as well as social equality related to environmental flows for use in Integrated Water Resources Management. To achieve this, a conceptual model is developed to describe the relationship between humans, the river ecosystem and the river flow. This was then applied to two areas: the Kushiyara river floodplain in Bangladesh, and the Hamoun wetlands I Iran.
