This is the 11th volume in the Sustainable Urban Areas series. It looks at current urban restructuring programmes in the Netherlands, where the housing stock built post-war is now ageing, posing serious social problems. Research has been carried out at the Delft Research Centre for Sustainable Urban Areas (DRC SUA). The effects of demolition and replacement strategies on sustainability in neighbourhoods are examined from different perspectives. The economic perspective shows the market position and the value of the neighbourhoods; the social perspective examines the levels of social capital and residential stability; the environmental perspective looks at energy efficiency and the use of materials in the restructuring. The contributing authors evaluate the implications of the restructuring strategies in the Netherlands, with emphasis on demolition and replacement. Such neighbourhood regeneration is a problem all over Europe |
