Bo Bengtsson, Emerirus Professor of Crop Production Science at Sweden’s University of Agricultural Science, has been involved in a variety of activities for four decades. He has made repeated visits to resource-poor farmers in Sweden, Ethiopia, Trinidad and Tobago in the 1960s, 1980s and the early 2000s. From the empirical data that he has collected he analyses agricultural research and development in the context of globalization and looks at he ways in which global threats and challenges may affect future policy for actions that would help the poor. This leads to reflections on potential areas for research and development, including the pros and cons of biotechnology and whether transgenic crops can help poor farmers. The challenge is to provide food security and food safety for the future. |
