The authors, both Professors at Columbia University, give an analysis of the issues and practices of preschool assessment in the USA, from the perspective of practising clinician–researchers. It is intended to be a textbook for courses in preschool/early childhood assessment and a manual for clinical practice. It focuses on how to think about assessment issues, how to select appropriate measures and procedures (giving extended test reviews), and how to integrate a variety of information for use in decision-making. There is a synopsis of the present research, federal laws, and practice relevant to preschool assessment, accompanied by case studies. Chapters look at: observations of the child and the environment; assessment of early academic learning and the family; linguistically and culturally diverse children; assessment of language development; cognitive assessment; assessment of mental retardation; assessment of autism spectrum disorders; and assessment of emotional behaviour and behaviour problems. |
