About 1.8 million peer-reviewed articles are published every year – if each article is reviewed by two reviewers, 3.6 million reviewers’ reports would be written every year. Up to now there has been nowhere where the ‘rules’ for a good peer review can be found. This book provides editors, publishers and reviewers with an authoritative source of guidance and help. There are chapters on: starting the peer-review process – the office and record-keeping; manuscript submission and initial checks on completeness and suitability; the full review process (identifying reviewers, inviting them, responses, amending reviewer reports etc.); the decision-making process – dealing with resubmissions etc.; moving to on-line submission and review; reviewer training, recompensing reviewers; the obligations and responsibilities of those involved in peer review; and misconduct in scientific publishing and how to deal with it. There are also appendices with a Good Practice Checklist and useful Websites. |
