Psychiatric disorders of all types, and depression in particular, are more common in people with physical illnesses than in the general population. In these eighteen chapters, specialists have looked at depression and its relation to specific health problems: coronary heart disease, physical disability, chronic pain, diabetes, chronic fatigue, cancer, and obesity. They have also looked closely at the biological and behavioural processes associated with depression: inflammation and sickness behaviour; the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis; immunity and depression; smoking and depression; physical activity and depression; and depression and adherence to medical advice (patients who are depressed may be less likely to follow medical advice). |
