Here Janet Wood starts by explaining how nuclear power works, its costs and its benefits, as well as its safety record. The last nuclear reactor to be built in Britain was Sizewell B, completed in 1995 and the nuclear plants considered for the next two decades are based on existing designs. The author debates the pros and cons of nuclear power and looks at whether the UK should build more nuclear power stations and, if so, what the designs of the near and more distant future might be. The Experimental Thermal Nuclear Reactor (ITER) should be in operation by 2015. In the light of this the possibility of nuclear fusion is examined. The book is aimed at the industry professional and readers who would like more knowledge of the subject that is currently at the centre of much debate. |
