The Quaternary – the last two million years or during which humans have inhabited the Earth – has been a time of great change in climate, sea-levels, vegetation belts, animal populations, soils and landforms. The authors begin by taking the reader through the Pleistocene and Holocene, looking at the changes between these two epochs. They then examine more recent meteorological records in the period up to the present day. Sea-level changes through out the Quaternary are compared, putting present-day concerns about potentially catastrophic sea-level changes in perspective. There is also a close examination of climate change and the impact of human activity on it. This new edition has been expanded and updated and has more emphasis on the relationships between past environment and people. |
