Review: This translation from the German, where the original text is now in its fifth edition, draws heavily on the ‘Systematic methods of design’. The book describes, from the beginning, starting with product development, how the costs of a product can be reduced, or kept below a required limit. With the close cooperation of product development, production, cost control, marketing and procurement departments, the authors’ experience is that a reduction of manufacturing cots of 10–30 per cent is possible. There are chapters on: cost responsibility, cost management and methodology and organization for product development, as well as how to influence lifecycle and total costs. Factors that influence manufacturing costs are identified and methods of reducing them are given. Finally, the identification of costs during product development and the fundamentals of cost accounting are discussed.
