Review: In 1495 Leonardo da Vinci designed (and maybe built) the first articulated humanoid robot, a knight in armour that could sit up , wave its arms and move its head. In 1965 Leonardo’s Book of Mechanics circa 1495 were discovered in the National Library of Madrid. The book was 382 pages long, but 16 were missing. This well-illustrated book tells the story of Mark Rosheim’s reconstruction of Leonardo’s robot knight and two other automata – the programmable cart and a ‘digital’ hydraulically-powered clock. He also solved the mystery of the missing folios.
