Review: Accurate localization and quantification of anatomical image structures in 3D tomographic images has been a largely unsolved problem because of their large variation in shape and intensity and the difficulties in analysing volumetric images compared with those of 2D images. Here Stefan Wörz looks at the extraction of two important classes of anatomical structures: 3D point landmarks and 3D tubular structures. Previous work has exploited the shape of the features, but here 3D intensity models are introduced to represent typical anatomical structures and depend on a certain number of parameters. These models are directly fitted to the images, and thus estimate the model parameters, in particular, the position as well as shape parameters. The approach has been used successfully to localize anatomical landmarks in 3D MR and 3D CT images.
