‘Failure analysis’ is the process of interpreting the features of a deteriorated system or component to determine why it no longer performs its intended function. This book aims to explain how and why machinery fails – how the basic failure mechanisms occur and what to do to prevent failure in the future. There are chapters on: an introduction to failure analysis; some general conclusions on failure analysis; materials and sources of stresses; overload failures; fatigue failures; understanding and recognising corrosion; lubrication and wear; belt drives; ball and roller bearings; gears; fastener and bolt joint failures; and a review of miscellaneous machine element failures. |
