Review: These are the proceedings (keynote lectures plus 350 papers) of the conference held in Yokohama, Japan, in September 2006. Geosynthetics are synthetic materials used in geotechnical engineering, such as geotextiles and geomembranes. The papers cover waste landfills, hydraulics, erosion, transport and reinforcement. There are four volumes. The first looks at waste landfills – landfill geosynthetic clay liners, liners on slopes, liner interface, sealing and drainage of barriers, and geomembrane properties. Volume 2 is on hydraulics (drainage testing and analysis; drainage case studies; dewatering; filtration; dams; reservoirs, canals and tunnels) and erosion (erosion control on slopes, coastal erosion control). The third volume looks at transport (road and airport, railways and seismic stability, embankments on soft soil, reinforced walls) and reinforcement (basal reinforcement, case studies of reinforced slopes and walls). The last volume looks at the modelling and design of reinforced slopes and walls; model and laboratory testing; the pull-out test; walls and seismic behaviours; the durability of geosynthetics; tensile loading on geosynthetics and their creep behaviour; geocells, fibre mixed soils and lightweight soils; and 3D applications and new reinforcement materials.
