Review: These are ten papers in the proceedings of a symposium held in Shanghai, China in October 2005. They are the result of a scientific collaboration looking at the effects of gas withdrawal from deep-seated onshore and offshore reservoirs on land subsidence in the Ravenna area in the northern Adriatic. Geological, geodetical, geophysical, geo-mechanical, fluid-dynamical and environmental issues are all addressed. The results would be applicable to other fluid extraction such as shallow water extraction, geothermal pumping or hydrocarbon production. They could be used for the planning and execution of necessary remedial action, or for strengthening public confidence in the work.
