Powder metallurgy is an ancient materials technology that has been used to fabricate large structures at high temperature. It also has its problems, one of which is the difficulty in integrating materials with different physical, chemical and mechanical problems. This book deals with explosive compaction, one of the methods of solving these problems. Explosives generate shock waves and different materials react differently – here the authors look at how explosive compaction differs from conventional processing, how a shock wave propagates through a material and what its characteristics are. There are chapters on: shock waves in matter; the technology of explosive compaction; the explosive compaction of metallic powders; the explosive compaction of composites; the explosive compaction of ceramic and super-hard materials; industrial applications; and opportunities for research. |
