This book tells the story of how the Dutch used and developed technologies over many centuries to create and maintain usable dry land in a very inhospitable environment. The author begins by recounting the history of Dutch flood protection and land reclamation from dwelling mounds built 2500 years ago to storm surge barriers that were completed at the end of the last century. He goes on to expand on this. There are chapters on: draining Noord-Holland lakes, draining the Haarlemmermeer, reclaiming the Zuiderzee, the rivers, sea defences and coastal reclamation, the delta project, water management organization, and excursions to flood protection and land reclamation sites. |
