Review: The new edition of this guide book reflects the expanded role of pharmacists in advising on self-treatment for self-limiting illness and in promoting healthy lifestyles in the community. The main section of the book describes signs and symptoms, provides a summary of conditions that could be causing the symptoms, and lists treatment options. Signs and symptoms that need referral are also described and case studies are included. New sections entitled 'second opinion' are included in most chapters and describe the action a doctor might take. Most chapters have a short bibliography focusing on the efficacy of over-the-counter medicines. The second section includes chapters on giving up smoking, cardiovascular disease, emergency hormonal contraception, and travel health. The book is illustrated with tables, diagrams and full-colour photographs and will be of interest to pharmacy students as well as to practising community pharmacists.
