Engineering is the art and science of production that, alongside reproduction, is the most fundamental of human activities. This book explains how engineers create technology. It is in two parts. The first chapters examine the history of engineering putting it in a socio-economic context, starting with the historical evolution of the concepts of technology, engineering and science. The histories of civil, mechanical, chemical, electrical and computing are all discussed. The last three chapters look at the content and contributions that engineering has made to technology and focus on the engineering aspects of design, science and leadership. The author uses case-exemplifying-concept and concept-illustrated-by case approaches. |
